Upholding a safe workplace is one of Ryerson's core values and a part of the company's culture. Ryerson's safety standards, which go beyond the minimum requirements enforced by government legislation, have helped protect the well-being of its people and prevent workplace injuries that can impact business productivity.
Ryerson continuously works to maintain a safety performance rating that outperforms the industry average and implements an Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) policy that reinforces the goal of a zero-injury workplace. Ryerson has strong job hazard analysis and near miss programs in place to be proactive in risk identification.
All locations are held to the same standards and comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, state and local health and safety codes and regulations, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Ergonomic evaluations are also done on workstations to ensure that Ryerson has the right equipment for employees to safely perform their jobs.
We actively address the communication of safety performance and activities across the company. This includes daily toolbox talks about safety topics in production huddles, lessons learned reports published weekly throughout the company, safety stand-downs that will include work stoppages to talk about safety and many other local communication efforts. It also involves programs aimed at recognition for proactive safety improvements initiated by employees through hazard identification and near miss programs.
To further promote safety awareness within the service centers, we celebrate Safety Week which underscores the safety standards we have in place and reminds employees how precautionary measures impact the success of the business and their own well-being. During Safety Week, facilities throughout the organization host events that reinforce Ryerson's safety standards and celebrate employees for maintaining a strong safety track record.
Ryerson is in compliance with EPA regulations in how it handles waste and annually allocates capital for energy efficient solutions in its warehouses. Ryerson's recycling programs are fully underway, from scrap metal to supplies, helping divert excess materials from landfills.
